Shunt power capacitor is used to reduce the reactive power component of an AC circuit in order to improve its efficiency and reduce current.

Reduction of inductive reactive power is called power factor correction (PFC).

The PFC capacitors are intended for individual, group or central power factor correction in low−voltage networks.
